Acceptance, Grounding, and Self-Compassion on Difficult Shifts

In ACT, acceptance means making room for difficult internal experiences without adding extra struggle. It does not mean approving poor conditions, ignoring risk, or accepting unsafe staffing. It means noticing feelings such as sadness, guilt, frustration and anxiety and then choosing the next useful action.

Grounding brings attention back to the present moment. Self-compassion reduces harsh self-judgement after difficult interactions, mistakes or emotionally heavy care and helps staff to continue working effectively.

Three short practices

  • Name what is here: "Anxiety is here", "guilt is here", or "this is a hard moment".
  • Ground through the body: feel both feet, soften the jaw, drop the shoulders and take one slower breath.
  • Use a kinder inner voice: "This is difficult, and I can take the next safe step."

Scenario

A serious safeguarding incident occurs shortly before the end of a shift. The residential child care worker has supported the young person, spoken with the senior on duty, followed recording and notification procedures, and still has further documentation to complete. She feels tearful and thinks, "I should be stronger than this."

How could acceptance, grounding and self-compassion support her?

Acceptance and self-compassion help staff stay human in human work. They support responsibility without adding unnecessary self-attack.
