Stress-Relief Methods for Maintaining Balance: Journaling, Relaxation, and Reflection

Acceptance reduces resistance to unavoidable pressure. Dental nurses also need simple, practical ways to recover during a demanding day. Short stress-relief methods let the body and mind reset, reduce tension, and keep someone able to work effectively through a busy session.
Reflection and relaxation should aid recovery; they are not a substitute for addressing repeated workplace problems.
1. Reflective journaling
A brief note after work helps separate events into what was controllable, what wasn't, and what might be tried next time. The aim is reflection, not self-criticism.
2. Quick relaxation exercises
- Take two slower breaths before leaving work.
- Drop the shoulders and unclench the jaw.
- Notice one thing that was handled reasonably well.
3. Reflection and gratitude
Reflection can note both difficulties and what mattered: a patient reassured, a handover clarified, or a task completed safely despite pressure.
Build these into the day
Recovery methods work best when they are brief and repeatable. A one-minute reset most days is more useful than a longer routine that rarely happens.
