Welcome

Learning disabilities awareness in dentistry means making care easier to access, easier to understand, and safer to receive. Dental nurses often encounter practical barriers: appointments that feel rushed, waiting rooms that are noisy, aftercare instructions that are unclear, or carers who need more specific guidance.
This course is for dental nurses who work with children, young people and adults with a learning disability. It covers respectful communication, reasonable adjustments, oral health risk, carer support, consent awareness, anxiety management, recordkeeping, and speaking up to improve practice systems.
Why This Course Matters
- Access is not automatic: some patients need extra time, accessible information, communication support, familiar routines or a quieter pathway.
- Oral health risks can be higher: difficulties with brushing, dietary issues, medicines causing dry mouth, sensory needs and dependence on others can affect daily care.
- Dental nurses are practical guides: reception staff, carers, trainee colleagues and dentists may rely on nurses for patient-specific details and day-to-day support.
- Advocacy makes a difference: small changes in practice routines can make repeat appointments safer and less distressing for patients.
How This Course Will Help You
You will follow the patient journey from recognising needs and supporting communication through to reasonable adjustments, prevention, treatment planning, anxiety support, carer involvement, recordkeeping and practice improvement.
