Types of Exercise for Effective Stress Management

Different kinds of exercise help with stress in different ways. The most useful activity is one that fits a person's schedule, physical ability, interests and energy level well enough to be done regularly.

The best activity is one the dental nurse can repeat safely and without turning it into another source of pressure.

Main categories of exercise

  • Aerobic activity: walking, cycling, swimming or dancing can improve mood, support sleep and strengthen cardiovascular fitness.
  • Strength activity: bodyweight work, resistance bands or weights can improve posture, physical capacity and confidence.
  • Stretching and mobility: gentle movements reduce stiffness after long periods standing or leaning.
  • Restorative movement: yoga, tai chi or relaxed walking combine movement with slower breathing to promote calm.
  • Enjoyable everyday activity: gardening, active commuting or playing with family also contributes to wellbeing.

Why variety can help

Variety makes it easier to maintain an exercise habit. A dental nurse might use walking for stress relief, mobility work to ease physical tension and strength exercises to support posture. The balance can shift with fatigue, shift patterns and outside responsibilities.

Scenario

A dental nurse assumes exercise only "counts" if it means long gym sessions, so she does nothing most weeks because that feels unrealistic alongside work and caring responsibilities.
