Optical practice course visual for Resilience Training

Resilience in optical practice means adapting and recovering after stressful events, asking for and using support, learning from setbacks, and continuing to provide safe, compassionate care. It grows through everyday habits, workplace relationships, clear boundaries and supportive systems rather than through individual toughness alone.

This course is for optical assistants, reception and administration staff, dispensing staff, dispensing opticians, optometrists, contact lens opticians, practice managers, supervisors, locums and other staff working in high street optical practice. It is written for a UK audience and notes that employer policies, NHS and private service arrangements, professional responsibilities and support routes differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The course teaches practical skills: simple cognitive reframing, recovery practices, effective self-care, setting and maintaining workplace boundaries, building supportive working relationships, learning after setbacks and reconnecting with work purpose. It also explains when to seek additional workplace or healthcare support.

Why This Course Matters

  • Optical practice work is emotionally demanding: staff regularly face distress, loss, conflict and competing needs.
  • Resilience can be developed: repeated small habits improve recovery and confidence.
  • Boundaries protect care: clear limits help staff sustain safe, respectful support.
  • Systems support staff: supervision, adequate staffing, breaks, training and a safe culture reinforce resilience.

How This Course Will Help You

On completion you will be able to describe practical resilience, use mental, physical and emotional recovery techniques, set and maintain healthy boundaries, respond constructively to setbacks and recognise when wider support is needed.
