Scenarios: Safeguarding and Consent Disputes

Scenario 7: Coerced Decision

Scenario

You are in the dispensing area with an older patient who is choosing new spectacles. Their adult child repeatedly pressures them to select a more expensive frame, despite the patient expressing a preference for a simpler, more affordable option. The patient appears uncomfortable, avoids eye contact and hesitates when answering questions.

How should you manage the situation to ensure that the patient's decision is voluntary and valid?

Scenario 8: Safeguarding Concern

Scenario

An adult with a learning disability attends with a carer who insists that the patient proceed with a particular treatment. During the discussion, it becomes clear that the patient does not fully understand what is being proposed and cannot explain the benefits or risks in their own words. The carer continues to press for treatment to go ahead despite evidence of limited understanding.

How should you respond when a patient appears unable to consent fully, but the carer is pressing for treatment to go ahead?
