Welcome

Dental nursing often triggers immediate self-criticism. When appointments run late, a patient is upset, a handover is unclear, feedback feels hard to hear, or a small error is caught in time, common responses include "I should have handled that better", "I should be faster", or "I should not find this so hard". Self-compassion offers a different way to respond that reduces unhelpful self-blame while maintaining standards and supporting steady judgement.
This CPD course is aimed at dental nurses working in practice and wider team settings. It supports GDC Development outcomes A and B by helping with communication, patient-centred care, professionalism, teamwork and managing pressure. Support arrangements differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so follow local workplace policy, local services and national pathways when relevant.
The course does not advocate lowering standards or ignoring mistakes. It explains how self-kindness, mindfulness and balanced self-talk can help dental nurses recover, reflect and continue working safely after stressful events.
Why This Course Matters
- Self-criticism can increase stress: harsh inner language narrows thinking and slows recovery.
- Self-compassion supports learning: it allows accountability without turning an error into a global self-attack.
- Dental nursing is emotionally demanding: anxious patients, delays, handovers and difficult feedback can trigger shame or rumination.
- Sustainable practice needs care: physical, emotional and professional self-care help maintain safe work over time.
How This Course Will Help You
After completing the course you will be able to describe the three elements of self-compassion, recognise negative self-talk, reframe self-critical thoughts and create a practical self-care plan to support safe, sustainable dental nursing practice.
