• The primary target is I 2.7: Describe the scope of practice of each member of the dental team and how the roles interact for effective teamwork and patient care.
• The course sits in the GDC Safe Practitioner Framework domain of Interpersonal Skills, sub domain Teamwork and Wellbeing of Others.
• Linked behaviour I(B)2: Respect the roles of dental and other healthcare professionals when learning and working in a dental or wider healthcare team.
• Linked behaviour I(B)3: Demonstrate effective team working.
• Linked behaviour I(B)5: Take a patient-centred approach when working with the dental and wider healthcare team.
• Linked behaviour I(B)6: Where appropriate, manage, refer or delegate work according to each team member's scope of practice, aligned with competence and professional standards.
• Dental nurses should communicate with care, compassion, empathy and respect in interactions with patients, the public and colleagues.
• Communication must be clear, confidential and accessible. Handover should be complete and recorded when needed.
• Effective teamwork depends on role clarity, mutual respect, constructive feedback, clear delegation limits and safe routes for raising concerns.
• Use factual language: pause, clarify, ask, hand over, record, give feedback, refer or escalate as appropriate.
• Public and social media communication can affect confidentiality, public trust and professional standards and must be managed accordingly.
