SPF P 1.12: core idea

  • P 1.12 requires you to describe the shared responsibilities for legal and regulatory compliance between dental practices and individual practitioners.
  • The practice must provide safe systems, written policies, staff training, risk assessment, record keeping, governance and regular review.
  • Individual dental professionals must use those systems correctly, work within their scope, maintain competence and raise concerns.
  • Effective compliance depends on both practice systems and individual accountability working together.

Practice-level evidence

  • Policies, procedures and named leads.
  • Training records, induction and competence sign-offs.
  • Risk assessments, audits and action plans.
  • Incident, complaint and safeguarding records.
  • Equipment, medicines, decontamination and emergency check logs.

Individual dental nurse responsibilities

  • Work within your role, scope, training and competence, and provide appropriate cover.
  • Keep accurate, contemporaneous records.
  • Complete checks honestly and avoid creating false evidence.
  • Use approved routes for confidentiality, data protection, complaints, safeguarding and incident reporting.
  • Seek advice when legal, regulatory or policy duties are unclear.
  • Escalate gaps in compliance that could affect patient safety, dignity or public trust.

Exam memory line

Practice systems plus individual accountability equals compliance in action: know the route, use it honestly, keep evidence and speak up when it fails.
