Welcome

Work in high street optical practice creates stress from multiple, often simultaneous sources: a distressed patient or customer, family members seeking updates, phone calls or waiting customers, delayed handovers, mounting records and admin, and physical tension. The CBT Five-Part Model separates that experience into linked elements so you can recognise specific parts and influence them.
This course is for optical assistants, reception and administration staff, dispensing staff, dispensing opticians, optometrists, contact lens opticians, practice managers, supervisors, locums and other staff working in high street optical practice. It is written for a UK audience while recognising that employer policies, NHS/private service arrangements, professional responsibilities and support routes differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This course does not train staff to deliver CBT as therapy. It presents the Five-Part Model as a CBT-informed self-management framework to help staff see how thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, behaviours and environmental factors interact in stressful optical practice situations.
Why This Course Matters
- Stress involves several interacting parts: thoughts, emotions, bodily responses, behaviour and the environment can amplify each other.
- The model clarifies what to notice: naming the parts makes it easier to spot where change is possible.
- Small changes can shift the cycle: adjusting breathing, a thought, communication or pacing can reduce stress.
- Optical work has recurring triggers: dispensing tasks, frame adjustments, reception pressure, distressed behaviour, family members, staffing issues and handovers make a structured approach useful.
How This Course Will Help You
After completing this course you will be able to map stressful optical practice situations using the Five-Part Model, identify how thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, behaviours and environmental pressures interact, and apply specific strategies to interrupt or reduce the stress cycle.
