Values-based action, team culture, and when to seek more support

ACT emphasises values: the qualities you bring to your work and interactions. In dental nursing these might include patient safety, calm communication, honesty, teamwork, compassion, fairness and professionalism. Values are different from targets or emotions; you can be stressed and still act in line with your values.
Values-based action includes speaking up and seeking support when pressure becomes unsafe or persistent.
Turning values into workable actions
- Safety: ask for clarification rather than guessing.
- Compassion: respond to an anxious patient with patience even while under pressure.
- Teamwork: flag workload pressure early rather than becoming silently overloaded.
- Professionalism: use respectful, factual language when raising concerns.
ACT is not a substitute for organisational support
ACT skills can help you manage responses to stress, but they do not justify unsafe staffing, repeated missed breaks, poor supervision or bullying. Persistent pressure requires appropriate workplace and health support.
