Welcome to Deaf Awareness for Pharmacy Staff

Pharmacy staff routinely share important information about prescriptions, medicines, consultations, vaccinations and follow-up care. For Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients, communication barriers can threaten privacy, understanding, consent and safe treatment. Small, practical adjustments often make care clearer and safer.

This course is designed for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dispensers, medicines counter staff, delivery staff and other members of the pharmacy team. It covers practical Deaf awareness for pharmacy settings: communication preferences, respectful language, Deaf culture, reasonable adjustments and steps teams can take to improve accessibility.

Why This Course Matters

Deaf and hard-of-hearing people use different communication methods. Some use British Sign Language (BSL), some lip-read, some prefer written information, and others use hearing aids or assistive technology. Safe care depends on asking which method works, adjusting how you communicate, and removing avoidable barriers.

  • Communicate more effectively: Practical approaches to support understanding at the medicines counter, in consultations and during pharmacy services.
  • Respect different communication needs: Clear guidance on Deaf culture, communication preferences and avoiding assumptions.
  • Make reasonable adjustments: Practical and legal steps that help make pharmacy care accessible.
  • Improve patient experience and safety: Simple changes that support confidentiality, confidence and informed decisions.

How This Course Will Help You

After completing this course you will be better equipped to communicate respectfully and accessibly with Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients, adapt routine pharmacy interactions, and make adjustments that improve safety, understanding and inclusion.
