Creating a Personal Mindfulness Routine for Resilience

A mindfulness routine can be brief and practical. For staff in children's homes, the most realistic routines link to everyday moments: before a shift, after handover, while washing hands, before entering a young person's bedroom, after a difficult conversation, or before leaving work.
Building a routine
- Choose one cue: for example, washing hands, putting on PPE, finishing documentation, or reaching the staff room.
- Choose one short practice: one breath, a 30-second body scan, a mindful walk along the corridor, or a brief gratitude note.
- Keep it realistic: a daily 30-second practice is more useful than an ambitious plan that rarely happens.
- Review gently: if it slips, restart without self-criticism.
The best mindfulness routine is the one you can actually repeat. Start small enough that it fits real children's residential care work.
