Welcome

Mindfulness means paying steady attention to the present moment with less judgement. In children's homes, short mindful pauses help staff notice what is happening, calm the breath and choose a measured response amid routines, young people’s distress, questions from families or professionals, paperwork and handovers.
This course is for residential child care workers, support workers, waking night staff, key workers, senior residential workers, team leaders, deputy managers, registered managers, therapists, administrators and other staff in children's homes. It is written for a UK audience and recognises that employer policies, regulators, safeguarding pathways and support routes differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This course does not train staff to deliver mindfulness therapy. It presents brief, practical mindfulness techniques for use during routine children's homes work to support focus, emotional regulation, communication and recovery.
Why This Course Matters
- Attention is pulled in many directions: urgent requests, young people's needs, family members and documentation fragment concentration.
- Mindfulness creates a pause: a single breath can reduce the chance of reacting sharply or rushing.
- Body awareness helps early: noticing tension, shallow breathing or bracing can prevent escalation.
- Small practices are realistic: children's homes staff usually need short techniques that fit between tasks rather than long sessions.
How This Course Will Help You
On completion you will be able to use mindful breathing, brief body scanning, mindful listening and simple routine-building to support steadier practice in children's homes.
