Welcome

Mindfulness is paying steady attention to the present moment with less judgement. In optical practice, short mindful pauses can help staff notice what is happening, calm the breath, and respond rather than react during patient care, customer enquiries, record keeping, administration and handovers.
This course is for optical assistants, reception and administration staff, dispensing staff, dispensing opticians, optometrists, contact lens opticians, practice managers, supervisors, locums and other staff working in high street optical practices. It is written for a UK audience while recognising that employer policies, NHS/private arrangements, professional responsibilities and support routes differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This course does not train staff to deliver mindfulness therapy. It presents brief, practical mindfulness techniques for use during routine optical practice work to support attention, emotional regulation, communication and recovery.
Why This Course Matters
- Attention is pulled in many directions: phone calls, waiting customers, patient needs and documentation interrupt concentration.
- Mindfulness creates a pause: a single breath can reduce the chance of reacting sharply or rushing.
- Body awareness helps early: noticing tension, shallow breathing or bracing can prevent escalation.
- Small practices fit work: staff usually need short techniques that can be used between tasks rather than long sessions.
How This Course Will Help You
On completion you will be able to use mindful breathing, brief body scans, mindful listening and simple routine-building to support steadier working in optical practice settings.
