Scenarios: Recognising Adult Abuse

Scenario 1: Dementia Patient with Carer

Scenario

You are in a clinic room with an older woman who has known mild dementia. A paid carer sits close by and answers every question for her, dismisses the patient's preferences about frames, and reaches for the patient's card to pay without asking. The patient looks anxious, avoids eye contact, and falls quiet when costs are mentioned.

What safeguarding risks are present, and how should you respond?

Scenario 2: Financial Abuse Concern

Scenario

An older man attends and tells you, "My son says I must get the most expensive pair or he'll be angry." He counts cash nervously to pay, declines adjustments, and seems hurried to leave before you can give the collection briefing.

How do you balance autonomy, safety, and documentation?
