• The primary target is S 1.2: Explain why insight is important in ensuring safe and effective patient care, and to personal development.
• The course sits in the GDC Safe Practitioner Framework domain of Self-management, sub domain Insight.
• Linked behaviour S(B)1: Accurately assess your own capabilities and limitations in the interest of high-quality patient care and seek advice from supervisors or colleagues where appropriate.
• Linked behaviour S(B)2: Recognise personal assumptions, biases and prejudices and manage the impact of these on patient care and professional behaviour with colleagues, patients and wider society.
• Linked behaviour S(B)3: Recognise the impact of contextual factors on the health care environment and patient safety and manage this professionally.
• Connect self-management with patient safety, scope of practice, clear communication, accurate records, feedback, CPD, reflective practice and escalation when required.
• Insight, learning and wellbeing are professional responsibilities. Concerns arising from unsafe systems should be raised through the correct channels.
• Use factual language: pause, clarify, seek advice, hand over, record, report, reflect or escalate as appropriate to the situation.
• Plan, evidence and review personal development rather than leaving it as informal intention.
• Keep reflection confidential, proportionate and focused on learning and safer future practice.
