Insight and Communication

Insight and Communication is part of meeting S 1.2. For dental nurses this means recognising when tone, wording, stress or confidence may affect patient understanding.

Insight is a practical safety skill. It helps dental nurses notice strengths and limits, recognise pressure or bias, and identify uncertainty before these affect patients or the team.

In practice this appears in small moments: a task becoming routine, a patient question just outside your role, an unclear handover, a colleague under pressure, a new system, or a feeling that something is not quite right. Professional self-management is noticing those moments and choosing a safe response.

Practical markers

  • Notice: what the patient, team, task or system is showing before the concern becomes normalised.
  • Check: your role, competence, current guidance, local policy and the support available.
  • Ask: for advice or feedback when uncertainty, workload, emotion or change could affect judgement.
  • Act: through a proportionate next step: pause, clarify, hand over, record, report, reflect or escalate.
  • Review: whether the action improved safety, learning, wellbeing or confidence for future practice.

Useful speaking-up language can be simple: "I may need advice before I do this, because I want to keep the patient and the team safe." The wording is respectful while naming the safety, learning or wellbeing concern clearly enough for someone else to act.
