Scenarios: planning and support

Pharmacist speaking with woman and young boy

These scenarios address assessment, the practical limits of the pharmacy setting, and working with parents, carers, and supporters while keeping the patient central to care.

Scenario

You are assessing a 42-year-old autistic man for a private travel vaccination. Clinically he may be eligible, but he cannot cope with unexpected touch, often leaves appointments if he feels trapped, and abandoned his last blood test because the room felt too bright and crowded.

Today the pharmacy is short-staffed, the consultation room is next to a noisy dispensary, and only a standard short appointment slot is available.

What does good assessment and care planning mean in this situation?

Scenario

You are completing discharge medicines counselling for a 15-year-old autistic girl who has started a new inhaler and a short course of steroids after admission. Her mother answers most questions and begins explaining home routines.

The girl is quiet at first, but when you ask her directly she says she prefers written instructions, does not like being interrupted, and wants to try using the spacer herself before anyone else speaks.

What does this show about working with parents, carers, and supporters?

Together, these scenarios show that supporters can improve care but should complement the patient's voice rather than replace it.
