Welcome to Autism Awareness for Clinical Pharmacy Staff

Clinical pharmacy staff support patients at routine points that can be stressful for autistic people: approaching the counter, moving into a consultation room, discussing medicines, receiving a vaccination, or trying to follow instructions while anxious, unwell, or overwhelmed. Clear communication, practical adjustments, and a calm, structured approach help make care safer and more accessible.

This course is for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other clinical pharmacy staff who have direct patient contact. It covers recognizing autism-related sensory and communication needs, adapting consultations and procedures, working with carers and supporters, and giving person-centred care in everyday pharmacy practice.

Why This Course Matters

Autistic people can experience pharmacy services differently. Noise, waiting, uncertainty, public questioning, sensory sensitivities, changes in routine, or difficulty processing spoken information may affect whether patients can access care and follow advice. Staff who can identify these challenges and respond appropriately support dignity, understanding, safety, and trust.

  • Build practical autism awareness: Learn how autism can affect communication, sensory processing, anxiety, routine, and engagement with pharmacy care.
  • Adapt care in real clinical settings: Practical ways to make consultations, medicines advice, vaccinations, and other patient-facing encounters more accessible.
  • Respond in a calm and person-centred way: Use clear language, reduce unnecessary stress, and make reasonable adjustments that help patients feel safe.
  • Work well with carers and supporters: Involve others appropriately while keeping the patient central and respecting privacy and individual preferences.

How This Course Will Help You

After this course you will be better able to recognise individual needs, communicate more effectively, reduce sensory and procedural distress, and provide autism-aware pharmacy care that is respectful, practical, and clinically effective.
