This final learning page brings earlier points together. In residential care, deaf awareness is usually a series of small moments where staff either help communication or create barriers.

Scenario

A resident who uses two hearing aids is invited to a review meeting about falls, moving and handling, and future equipment. One hearing aid has been missing since the laundry round, the room is dim, several people speak over one another, and the resident keeps saying, "I can't catch this." The meeting continues quickly because the home is busy and everyone wants to finish.

What should a deaf-aware team do differently here?

Deaf awareness in residential care is formed by everyday habits: paying closer attention, keeping clear records, maintaining safe hearing-aid routines, and being prepared to slow down when someone does not understand.
