Scenario 3: Cultural Expectations

Scenario

A patient attends your practice from a cultural background where healthcare interactions are expected to be formal and business-like. You greet them with warmth and informal conversation, hoping to put them at ease. The patient appears uncomfortable and unresponsive, offering minimal verbal feedback and closed body language. Recognising that your usual approach may not be working, you consider how to adapt your communication to respect their expectations while still conveying care.

How should you adjust your expression of compassion to align with the patient's cultural expectations?

Scenario 4: Patient with Sight Loss Attending Alone

Scenario

A patient with significant sight loss attends the practice unaccompanied. They hesitate navigating the waiting area and consulting room, pausing before doorways and changes in floor level. Although they clearly need some assistance, they are keen to maintain independence and appear uncomfortable if you presume too much. You prepare to offer support in a way that preserves their autonomy and dignity.

How should you provide compassionate support while preserving the patient's dignity and autonomy?
