Scenario 5: Child in Distress

Scenario

You are conducting a routine sight test in the consulting room. A 7‑year‑old who had been co‑operating suddenly becomes upset as you prepare the next part of the exam. They push away equipment, start crying and refuse to continue. The parent stands close by, clearly worried, and urges you to carry on with the test.

How should you respond to show compassion while balancing the parent's expectations and the child's needs?

Scenario 6: Patient with Dementia

Scenario

An older patient with moderate dementia attends for an eye examination. Midway through the appointment they become confused, repeatedly asking where they are and why the test is being done. Their carer, unsettled by the patient's confusion, suggests abandoning the appointment.

How should you respond to support the patient with compassion while ensuring dignity and safety?
