Exam Pass Notes

Autism and Neurodiversity
- Needs differ between individuals; do not assume one communication style or adjustment fits everyone.
- Autistic patients often need clear wording, extra processing time and predictable pathways through care.
- Treat neurodiversity as a variation in how people think and interact, not something to be fixed.
Communication and Sensory Needs
- Use specific, literal language and give real timeframes when you can.
- Busy waiting areas, sudden changes and vague instructions can cause distress or confusion.
- Offer reasonable adjustments in line with local policy and explain them clearly to the patient.
Supporters and Confidentiality
- Keep the patient central when carers or supporters are present; address the patient directly where possible.
- Check consent and any proxy arrangements before sharing personal information.
- If the patient cannot speak freely, escalate according to practice safeguarding and consent procedures.
Records and Systems
- Record practical adjustments and communication needs rather than labels.
- Use structured fields, flags or alerts where your system allows them.
- If the same barriers recur, raise them as system issues for review and improvement.
