Welcome

Autism-aware dental care matters because routine dentistry can be intense, unpredictable, noisy, bright, invasive and hard to process. Dental nurses often notice anxiety first, support communication, prepare the environment, reassure patients, assist reception staff and help keep treatment safe and on schedule.
This course is written for dental nurses working in UK practice. It covers chairside support, reception handover, reasonable adjustments, sensory needs, recordkeeping, post-treatment care and the role of sedation-trained dental nurses when conscious sedation is part of a safe treatment plan.
Why This Course Matters
- Every autistic patient is different: communication, sensory processing, anxiety, pain expression and routines vary between individuals.
- Preparation reduces distress: clear information, predictable appointments and sensory planning can make dental care more accessible.
- Dental nurses see the whole pathway: needs can appear at reception, in the surgery, during recovery or after the patient has left.
- Speaking up protects dignity: small adjustments can prevent overload, consent problems or unsafe rushed treatment.
How This Course Will Help You
By the end of the course you should be able to use respectful language, support communication, plan reasonable adjustments, recognise sensory triggers, contribute to sedation-aware preparation and recovery, work with parents and carers, and advise colleagues when a patient would benefit from a calmer or more flexible approach.
