Safe use, dilution and storage

Cleaner talking with two children in hallway

Practical habits control most COSHH risks. Choose the correct product for the task, follow the local dilution and contact-time instructions, ensure adequate ventilation where required, and store substances so children cannot access them and staff can readily identify each item.

Never mix products to make them "stronger". Do not decant chemicals into unapproved containers unless authorised by the system in use. Improvised mixing or storage shortcuts can produce toxic fumes, splashes, burns or confusing labelling for the next person handling the product.

PPE matters but is not the only protection. Selecting lower-hazard products, using measured dosing systems, keeping clear storage, providing ventilation, supervising tasks and using simple procedures all reduce exposure before gloves or eye protection become necessary.

Poisons children find at home

Video: 4m 2s · Creator: RoSPATube. YouTube Standard Licence.

This RoSPA video, made with Dr Nicola Ubayasiri from Nottingham University Hospital's Paediatric Emergency Department, highlights household poisoning risks to children. It shows how ordinary items can be dangerous when children can reach them, mistake them for something safe, or use them unsupervised.

The video is intended as a reminder about storage and access control rather than a technical chemical-handling guide. It reinforces keeping potentially poisonous substances locked or out of sight, separating them from everyday items, and directing viewers to RoSPA home-safety information for further advice.

Key daily controls

  • Use the right product for the task.
  • Follow the local dilution method.
  • Keep products secure and away from children.
  • Use ventilation where needed.
  • Never mix products casually.

Scenario

A worker mixes two cleaning products because they think it will make the bathroom smell cleaner and save time.

Why is that unsafe?

Most COSHH mistakes do not begin with malice. They begin with convenience, routine and false confidence.
