Using devices without interpreting results

Support staff may be authorised to operate specific devices, capture images, record measurements, save files, repeat technical steps or prepare information for a registrant. Those tasks do not include interpreting clinical results.
An OCT image, pressure reading, visual field plot, photograph, lensmeter value, error message or failed capture can influence clinical decisions. If something looks unusual, inconsistent or poor quality, hand it over to the registrant rather than attempting a clinical explanation.
What support staff can usually do when authorised
- Explain the practical task in plain language.
- Position the patient and adjust comfort within training.
- Use the device according to the local SOP.
- Repeat a technical step only where the SOP allows.
- Save or attach outputs to the correct record.
- Inform the registrant about difficulties, poor fixation, failed tests, patient symptoms or error messages.
What needs handover
Do not tell a patient that a scan, pressure, image or field is normal unless a registrant has reviewed and authorised that message. Do not dismiss a poor result as "just the patient not trying". Do not delete or hide failed or repeated attempts unless the SOP and record process specify what to do.
Use brief, clear phrases that maintain professional boundaries: "I have captured the image; the optometrist will review it," or "This machine has flagged something I need to pass on. I cannot interpret it."
Operating a device is not the same as interpreting its output. Capture, save, hand over and stay within role.
