High-Risk Safeguarding Scenarios

Hands surrounding wooden people figures

These scenarios describe high-risk situations where signs may be brief and an incorrect response could increase harm. Use the same Level 2 principles throughout: notice, respond calmly, record accurately, and escalate via the appropriate route.

Scenario

You are working at the medicines counter at the start of the summer holidays. A 13-year-old girl comes in with an older female relative asking for strong pain relief and dressings.

The girl is walking stiffly, avoids sitting down, and looks close to tears. When you ask whether she wants to speak, the relative answers for her and says they have just returned from a family trip abroad. As they leave, the girl quietly asks, "Will it stop hurting soon?"

How should you respond?

Scenario

You are on reception during the school holidays when a 16-year-old girl quietly asks whether a prescription is ready. An older female relative answers for her and says the family will be travelling abroad soon for an important wedding.

The girl looks distressed and says softly, "I don't want to go." When you ask if she is all right, the relative interrupts, calls her dramatic, and tells her to stop embarrassing the family.

What concerns and actions are appropriate?

These examples show why high-risk concerns must be treated seriously even when evidence is fragmentary and the young person cannot speak freely.
