Scenarios: Recognising Abuse

Scenario 1: Child with Bruises

Scenario

You are conducting a routine sight test for a 7-year-old. The child has periorbital bruising and a small subconjunctival haemorrhage. The accompanying parent first tells you the child "fell at school" and later, in a separate remark, says the child "bumped into a door." During questioning the child looks to the parent before answering.

What warning signs matter here, and what are the next steps?

Scenario 2: Neglected Child

Scenario

An 11-year-old presents after missing two amblyopia follow-ups. The child arrives wearing glasses held together with tape, appears to have poor hygiene, and has persistent conjunctivitis. The caregiver explains they "couldn't get time off work."

How should neglect be assessed and addressed?
