Messages, results and appointment details

Messages, test results and appointment details are common causes of accidental disclosure. A short text, a printed letter or a brief phone confirmation can reveal information the patient expects to remain private.
Reception staff handle routine administrative information that can still be sensitive. A clinic location, the name of a test, a result category or a follow-up appointment may reveal health details.
Before sending or saying
- Check the recipient: confirm the correct number, email or address.
- Check the content: use approved wording and only the minimum necessary detail.
- Check safe-contact notes: do not use texts, emails or voicemails that are flagged as unsafe.
- Check the route: ensure results and clinical interpretation follow the agreed process.
Results need particular care
Patients may ask reception staff whether a result is "good" or "bad". Do not give clinical interpretation. Follow the local result-handling process and escalate if the patient describes urgent symptoms or is distressed.
Do not leave result details with another household member unless you have explicit authority and local procedure permits it.
Use the minimum necessary information in the safest available channel.
