Eyes, breaks and early warning signs

Person rubbing their eyes while using a laptop

DSE work can cause tired eyes, headaches and mental fatigue as well as back and wrist discomfort. Glare, poor lighting, small text and long uninterrupted periods at a screen increase the risk.

Short changes of activity are often effective. Looking away, standing up, stretching, switching tasks or altering posture before discomfort appears will help prevent symptoms from developing.

DSE use does not cause permanent eye damage, but it can produce eye fatigue, discomfort and headaches, and can make existing vision problems more noticeable. Staff who are DSE users should follow local arrangements for eye tests.

Workstation Exercises | Upper Body | iHASCO

Video: 1m 18s · Creator: iHasco. YouTube Standard Licence.

This iHASCO video demonstrates a short upper-body stretch for workstation users. The exercise targets the neck, upper back, chest, wrists and fingers to release tension in the neck and shoulders.

The sequence starts with the fingers interlocked, palms turned outward, hands pushed forward, arms straight and the upper back rounded while the neck is relaxed and the chin dropped. After holding for a few calm breaths, the arms lift overhead with fingers still interlocked, the chest is opened and the head allowed to fall back gently.

The flow returns to the forward stretch as the arms lower and the spine rounds again. The video suggests repeating the sequence three times, breathing in to lift the arms and breathing out to push forward to deepen the stretch.

Early signs to notice

  • Tired or dry eyes.
  • Headaches during or after screen work.
  • Neck or shoulder stiffness.
  • Wrist, hand or forearm ache.
  • Fatigue that matches screen-heavy work.

Scenario

A worker gets headaches every time they complete long online training modules, but they assume that is just part of training.

What is the better response?

Eye strain and headaches are early warnings that the task or the workstation setup needs attention.
