Exam Pass Notes

Use these notes for a quick final review before the assessment. They summarise the personal-safety habits covered in the course and do not replace your home's risk assessments, emergency procedures or local reporting arrangements.
- Personal safety in children's homes covers responding to aggression and threats, managing visitors and lone working, recognising environmental hazards, and preventing sharps and contamination risks.
- Warning signs and changing behaviour often appear before an interaction becomes physically dangerous.
- Keep language calm, set clear boundaries and create space; these reduce escalation more reliably than arguing.
- Avoid restricting movement in areas such as doorways, corners and stairs. Clutter changes how safe an interaction feels and can increase risk.
- Plan and assess extra risks for night shifts and isolated tasks before you begin them.
- Personal safety does not require accepting abuse to appear calm or caring; staff should protect themselves and follow procedures.
- Sharps and exposure to body fluids require an immediate, controlled local response and follow-up according to your policies.
- Do not handle sharps casually or leave them where children can reach them; use approved sharps disposal and local arrangements.
- Near misses are important because they reveal recurring risks before someone is seriously injured.
- Clear reporting and debriefs help the home identify patterns and improve prevention, not just record events.
