Exam Pass Notes

Learning Disability Basics
- Learning disability can reduce understanding, affect communication and make everyday tasks harder.
- Do not assume either incapacity or full independence - assess the person’s needs and preferences.
- People with learning disabilities may require reasonable adjustments to access care and services.
Communication and Adjustments
- Use plain language. Ask one question at a time and give a clear short summary of what you have agreed.
- Record accessible information and any adjustment needs in the patient record where the team can see them.
- Check whether appointment booking, reminders and waiting arrangements are usable for the patient and arrange alternatives where needed.
Health Checks and Safety
- People aged 14 or over on the GP learning disability register are eligible for an annual health check.
- Do not let a learning disability mask new symptoms or other health concerns; report changes promptly.
- Escalate repeated missed checks or ongoing access barriers so they can be addressed.
Carers, Consent and Safeguarding
- Keep the patient central when carers or supporters are involved and involve them only as the patient wants.
- Confirm authority before sharing confidential information with carers or family members.
- Raise safeguarding concerns promptly if you suspect abuse or neglect - you do not need proof to report.
