Understanding everyday physical risks

Person tripping over cable on wooden floor

Slips, trips, falls and low-level access incidents usually result from multiple factors acting together: the state of the floor, poor housekeeping, weather, unsuitable equipment, rushing, distraction or weak workplace systems.

Why these risks matter in pharmacy

Pharmacy staff move frequently between dispensary, stockroom, consultation room and shop floor. Deliveries, boxes, cleaning, wet entrances, narrow routes and reaching for stock increase the chance of injury when controls are lacking.

People and systems both matter

Staff need to take care when they move, clean up hazards and use access equipment. Employers and managers must provide clear walkways, suitable flooring, good lighting, appropriate cleaning routines, correct equipment and a culture where hazards and near misses are reported.

Common causes

  • Floor conditions: wet floors, spillages, contamination, loose mats or uneven surfaces.
  • Poor housekeeping: stock, totes, bags, cages or cables left where people walk.
  • Unsafe access: overreaching, climbing on unsuitable furniture, or using the wrong steps or ladder for the task.
  • Changing conditions: rainwater at entrances, cleaning in progress, poor lighting or rushed work during busy periods.

Everyday physical risks are easiest to prevent when staff stay alert and the workplace systems around them are designed to support safe working.
